Update: Lady Gaga will let Weird Al perform the song. No East Coast/West Coast rap war-style shenanigans between the two camps (does Weird Al have a camp? Does he have a posse?). Anyway, the original post is below and is pretty much all invalid at this point.

So it looks like Lady Gaga is going to be like Coolio in at least one way (well, two ways if you count strange hairstyles) — she rejected Weird Al when he wanted to parody a song of hers (in this case, Born This Way).

Only Lady Gaga went a step further and decided to waste as much of Weird Al’s* time as possible. At least according to Weird Al’s blog.

In a metaphorical nutshell, here’s what happened.

I wrote and recorded what I thought was going to be the first single off of my new album: a parody of “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga called “Perform This Way.” But after hearing it, Lady Gaga decided not to give me permission to release the song, so… it won’t be coming out commercially anytime in the near future. Sorry.

Go to the link above for the “long version” including where Weird Al said that he would have donated all of the money from the single to the Human Rights Campaign.

BTW, this may be the closest I’ve ever come to hearing Lady Gaga’s version of “Born This Way.” I honestly have no idea if this even sounds anything like Lady Gaga’s version of the song.

* How are you supposed to reference “Weird Al” on the second reference? Just call him “Weird?” “Al?” “Yankovic?” I just went with “Weird Al.” Same goes for Lady Gaga.

The New York Times this isn’t.
